ROUTE GUIDES

There are 2 route options when you hire canoes and kayaks from us.

  • Route 1 – Yalding Up & Down

  • Route 2 – Yalding Down & Up

Both routes start and finish at the Yalding Canoe Launch Point, Hampstead Lane, Yalding, ME186HG. In the summer months there is virtually no movement on the river between the locks which enables you to paddle in both directions.

For either route you will paddle in one direction, stop for a picnic/packed lunch and then turn around and retrace your route back to the start. The distance/duration for each route can be varied depending how far you want to paddle in one direction before stopping and heading back.

Route 1 - Yalding Up & Down (7-13km)

You will paddle upriver heading towards Tonbridge. There are a number of locks that you will need to carry the boats around (portage). Each lock represents a “step up” in the river. On your return you have the option of going down a canoe chute at every lock to save you carrying the boat back around the locks. The canoe chutes are great fun for those wanting a more adventurous day! This route is more tree lined than Route 2 with lots of bends to keep you guessing what is around the next corner. It also offers better shelter and shade on windy and hot sunny days.

Route 2 - Yalding Down & Up (6-18km)

You will paddle downriver heading towards Maidstone. There are several locks that you will need to carry the boats around (portage). Each lock represents a “step down” in the river. Teston Lock has a double canoe chute to bypass the lock for some added excitement! On your return you will again carry around the locks. This route has more open/valley views than the upriver section but it can be more difficult on windy days and offers less shelter being more exposed. You also have the option of exploring the River Beult which is another pretty river that flows under the medieval bridge at Yalding.
